Downers Grove Ice Festival 2026: Your Winter Guide

Community News January 29, 2026

The Downers Grove Ice Festival for 2026 is scheduled to take place from January 30 through February 1 in the downtown area. This annual festival attracts residents and visitors from across the western suburbs to experience a celebration of ice art, local culture, and community spirit. It offers a unique winter experience that encourages people to explore downtown on foot and appreciate the creativity that can be expressed through ice sculpting.

More than sixty ice sculptures will be on display throughout the downtown area. These sculptures are created by skilled ice artists and sponsored by local businesses and organizations. The sculptures range from whimsical figures such as a robot or a shamrock to classic winter themed pieces such as a figure skater or an angel. Among the returning favorites is the popular sculpture known as the kissing booth. Visitors will be able to walk through the downtown district and discover these ice creations in front of shops, restaurants, and along pedestrian areas.

Live ice carving demonstrations will be part of the festival schedule. On Friday evening, January 30, demonstrations will take place from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the corner of Main Street and Curtiss Street. These demonstrations give visitors the chance to see professional sculptors at work, transforming large blocks of ice into detailed art right before their eyes. On Saturday, January 31 and Sunday, February 1, carving demonstrations will continue from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Main Street Train Station. These demonstrations are a key component of the festival experience, allowing onlookers to appreciate the artistic process as well as the finished pieces.

The Ice Festival is designed to be a free and family friendly event. While walking through downtown, attendees can take part in informal ice related games and activities that are part of the celebration. A map of the sculpture locations is typically made available so that visitors can plan their route and make the most of their time. Those who enjoy photography are encouraged to take pictures of their favorite sculptures and share them on social media with the hashtag designated for the festival or by tagging the official Downtown Downers Grove page. Participants who share their photos in this way are entered into a drawing for local gift cards, which supports community engagement and highlights the festival on social channels.

In addition to the sculptures themselves, the festival provides an opportunity for visitors to support local businesses. Downtown Downers Grove is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, cafes, and service providers. Attending the Ice Festival provides a reason to explore these local establishments during the winter months. Many downtown businesses remain open throughout the event, offering warm beverages, seasonal menus, shopping opportunities, or special promotions that complement the festival atmosphere.

The Ice Festival has become a staple winter event in Downers Grove because it brings people together at a time of year when outdoor activities are otherwise limited. It transforms the downtown area into a temporary outdoor art gallery where residents can enjoy public art while connecting with neighbors. The festival invites people to slow down and explore the village on foot, to celebrate both artistic skill and local pride.

For anyone interested in visual art, community events, or simply enjoying time outdoors in a downtown setting during winter, the Downers Grove Ice Festival offers something meaningful. It is a chance to engage with the community, support downtown businesses, and take part in a seasonal tradition that celebrates creativity in a distinctive and memorable way.
