1. Light Up the Season: Tree Lighting & Santa’s Arrival

The festivities kick off with a heartwarming Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, November 28, at 4:30 p.m. Santa himself makes a grand entrance (with a little help), and together with our community, he helps illuminate a beautiful downtown tree. It’s a magical moment — a true holiday tradition and a perfect way to welcome the season.

2. Shop Local on Small Business Saturday

On Saturday, November 29, support downtown’s independent shops, salons, and restaurants during Small Business Saturday. This is your chance to find thoughtful, one-of-a-kind gifts — all while investing in the community that makes Downers Grove so special.

3. Family Fun & Free Rides on Sunday

Bring joy to your Sunday with horse-drawn wagonette rides, happening from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on November 30. The wagon departs from 1028 Curtiss Street, offering a cozy, scenic ride through downtown. It’s a picture-perfect holiday activity for families or couples looking to bask in seasonal charm.

4. Holiday Window Contest & Scavenger Hunt

Local shop windows are turning into mini winter wonderlands! Over 20 downtown businesses are competing in the Holiday Window Decorating Contest, featuring categories like Traditional, Most Original, and Best Use of Product. Voting is open through December 7, so take a stroll, admire the creativity, and pick your favorites.

If you’ve got a detective side, try the Holiday Scavenger Hunt, too. Families can hunt for hidden festive items in storefront windows. Kids who finish the hunt redeem their form for a prize, and adults can enter by sending a photo of their completed form for a shot at a Downtown Downers Grove gift card. 

5. Say Hello to Santa — in His Gingerbread House

Every Saturday and Sunday from November 29 through December 21, Santa will be waiting in his very own Gingerbread House (at Main & Curtiss), from 1–4 p.m. Bring your camera — these visits are complimentary, and it’s a classic holiday photo op. 

6. Carolers & Holiday Cheer on the Streets

Nothing says “holiday” like music in the air. On weekends through December 21, local caroling groups will launch into joyful tunes as they stroll downtown. While you’re listening, snap a selfie with one of the 3D holiday decorations and tag @DowntownDownersGrove on Instagram or Facebook for a chance to win weekly gift cards. 

7. Candy Cane Cash Rewards

Here’s a sweet perk: spend at least $100 at three different downtown businesses during the season and earn $10 “Candy Cane Cash”. It’s a festive way to give back (to yourself) while supporting local shops.
